Kayla Abner

About

Hi! I'm Kayla Abner and I have worked as a Digital Scholarship Librarian at the University of Delaware since 2019. I’m a big believer in using teaching to empower students and faculty to create meaningful and feasible digital projects. I take a social justice approach to digital scholarship in ways like helping scholars understand the ethics of data collection and use, and encouraging students to highlight non-dominant perspectives in their digital storytelling projects. I'm interested in:

  • Collections as data
  • Data visualization and analysis
  • Digital humanities
  • Data literacy
I have a Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2019).

Teaching Highlights

Collections as data

I've integrated the concept of collections as data in my teaching through workshops, and I'm thinking about how to create datasets based on special collections materials used in course instruction.

Storytelling with Data

Storytelling with Data: Best Practices for Data Visualization is a workshop I offer regularly at UD. We focus on telling good stories with data visualization, and talk about graphic design principles related to data viz.
